Marketing operations has grown significantly in recent years with the increased need for transparent, efficient and an accountable view of marketing. The proliferation of marketing technology and increased pressure from higher executives to prove the value of marketing has spurred its growth.

There really is no blueprint for preparing oneself for a career in marketing operations, especially when you’ve been called to the job from another department or functional group. Whether or not you’re qualified, expectations are generally high and learning at an insanely fast pace is necessary. From becoming an expert Googler, to acquiring an experienced mentor, Adam Karpuszka talks about his career and has advice for others interested in marketing operations. Among his top tips, Adam recommends talking to the users of the company’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to determine how they use it every day and learn from the power users. Most CRMs – Adam uses Salesforce – have helpful self-guided or in-person training which can be helpful.

Adam joined Continuum in 2011 as Creative Manager and Webmaster. He moved to marketing operations at the company in 2013. He is based out of Continuum’s Pittsburgh area office in Cranberry, Pennsylvania that houses Continuum’s Help Desk, which supports 50,000 IT users for the company’s more than 3,500 Managed Services Provider (MSP) partners.
